As preparations for the Really Big Yard Sale & Silent Auction were being made, the young ladies of Advent decided on their own that they wanted to sell lemonade at the event to raise money for a good cause. After checking out the ELCA Good Gifts program, they chose mosquito nets, which cost $10 per family or $250 for an entire village.
More than 40 African countries struggle with malaria, a highly preventable disease transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. And, as the girls made sure everyone who passed their table knew, a child dies of malaria somewhere in the world every 45 seconds.
The lemonade brigade raised just over $90.00 – enough for nine nets! Or, as they reported excitedly, “We’ve saved nine lives!”
